Professorships

Within the InnovationCampus Future Mobility (ICM), one professorship has been established at the University of Stuttgart so far. Another professorship at the University of Stuttgart and two more at KIT will follow.

Laser technology in manufacturing

Professor Andreas Michalowski has been appointed to the chair of "Laser Technology in Manufacturing" at the University of Stuttgart as of August 1, 2022. Together with Professor Thomas Graf, he heads the Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW). This professorship was newly established within the ICM.

Goals

  • Teaching and research in the field of laser technology for manufacturing applications with special emphasis on digital production
  • Integration into the study programs of Mechanical Engineering, especially within the specialization subject Material Processing with Lasers and in the master program Photonic Engineering
  • Autonomous production machines that independently ensure productivity and quality in the event of component changes, new system technology or new requirements
  • Rapid transferability of laboratory processes to production machines
  • Development of new process strategies to open up new possibilities and improve productivity
  • Process control for the realization of stable and adaptable laser processes
  • New sensor technology for process monitoring with high reliability
  • Active beam shaping and beam guidance for higher productivity and more stable processes

Approaches

  • Development of machine concepts and demonstrators to exploit the flexibility and performance of future beam sources for production technology
  • Development of hybrid models (physics + AI) and software and their integration into laser production machines
  • Sensor data fusion, development of new sensor concepts and new approaches to signal evaluation for process control and monitoring
