The "Future Mobility Grants" funding program within the InnovationCampus Future Mobility (ICM) is intended to promote and support the international cooperation of the ICM with researchers from all over the world. The new deadline are as following:
07/01/2024 for the meeting of the Research Board on 25/01/2024
07/04/2024 for the meeting of the Research Board on 25/04/2024
Applications can be submitted at any time. If you have any questions about the program, please contact mobilitygrants(at)icm-bw.de.
The "Future Mobility Grants" are divided into four separate funding measures. More information can be foung below.
Current status of our funding programs - We can currently only accept applications for the period 2024 as we are still waiting for funding approval for the year 2025 onward. We will provide feedback to all interested parties as quickly as possible. However, we can only give a binding commitment for the coming calendar year.
The “Future Mobility Grants“ and the complementary exchange program within the framework of the InnovationCampus Future Mobility (ICM) promote international cooperation between ICM researchers and their counterparts around the world.
Applications can be submitted at any time. Applications are reviewed four times a year:
More dates to follow.
PhD students and postdocs at KIT or the University of Stuttgart can apply by themselves for the “Short-term Grants for Talents“ for a research stay abroad. Scientists from abroad are not eligible.
For stays of international visiting scientists (postdocs, experienced scientists, professors) at the University of Stuttgart and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), further grant programs are available within the framework of the “Future Mobility Grants“. In this case academic staff of KIT or the University of Stuttgart should nominate the respective persons.
The research topic of the project for “Future Mobility Grants“ must fit the research fields of the ICM, i.e. Manufacturing Systems, Mobility Technologies, Software-System-Architectures.
“Future Mobility Grants“ can be used to subsidize the costs of research stays abroad, so-called Short-term Grants for Talents or for research stays at KIT/at the University of Stuttgart (Short-term Grants for International Collaborations, Mid-term Fellowships for Experts, Visiting Professors/International Experts). Furthermore, they differ with regard to their duration:
After reviewing the application documents, they will be sent to the ICM Research Board which will make a recommendation regarding the grant. In the case of Mid-term Fellowships for Experts, the recommendation will be forwarded to the independent Award Committees at the University of Stuttgart or KIT. The final decision on funding is made by the respective Award Committee, which includes scientists from several disciplines. The ICM Research Board and the Award Committee meet four times a year.
Details on all grants can be found in the program information and on each grant’s website (in German and English).
There are four different grant programs available within the “Future Mobility Grants“. They are aimed at different research groups and depend on the objectives of networking, i.e. research stays of PhD students can only be funded with Short-term Grants for Talents.
Employees of KIT or the University of Stuttgart can apply for the “Future Mobility Grants“ or nominate a person if the research topic of the project fits the ICM research fields, i.e. Manufacturing Systems, Mobility Technologies, Software System Architectures. The nomination is not limited to scientists of ICM projects at participating institutes.
You can find a checklist of all necessary documents and process steps on the website of a specific grant. Please use the provided templates provided in the Downloads section.
For the following grants, only templates in English language are available:
The documents for the Short-term Grants for Talents can be completed in either English or German.
Please submit the nomination and application documents in electronic form at mobilitygrants(at)icm-bw.de or by mail to the following address:

In most cases, you will be informed of the decision by e-mail within two weeks after the Research Board meeting. For some grants, we also send the notification to the nominated persons by mail. We will inform you about the process and the decision in due time.
The selection of applicants is based solely on the evaluation of their scientific qualifications. There are no funding quotas for specific fields or countries.
In case of a negative selection decision for the respective selection date, individual applicants may be placed on a shortlist by the selection committee. The persons concerned will be informed about this and will automatically be added to the application pool for the next selection date. If an application is completely rejected, a new application may be submitted at any time, but the application must be significantly improved in the essential points.
The Welcome Center of the University of Stuttgart and the International Scholars & Welcome Office of the KIT offer a good overview for international researchers.
Two months after the end of the stay (or stays, i.e. Short-term Grants for International Collaborations), a final report presenting the most important results and the kind of collaboration of the applicant or nominator is requested. This report should be submitted digitally by e-mail to the ICM management and to the Grants project management.
For the grant “Visiting Professors/International Experts“, an annual scientific activity report must be sent to the ICM management and the grants project management for reporting purposes.
The funding measure “Future Mobility Grants“ is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts of the State of Baden-Württemberg (MWK). When publishing the research results that have been published in professional journals within the scope of the „Future Mobility Grants“, please add the following sentence regarding your funding:
In German: „Wir danken dem Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst des Landes Baden-Württemberg (MWK) für die finanzielle Unterstützung im Rahmen der „Future Mobility Grants” vom InnovationsCampus Mobilität der Zukunft (ICM).“
In English: “The authors would like to thank the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg for the financial support of the project within the framework of the „Future Mobility Grants” of the InnovationCampus Future Mobility (ICM).”
Short version for the promotion of the ICM for other publications (DE/EN).
In German: „Gefördert durch das Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg (MWK).“
In English: “Funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.“
For further networking with various partners at the InnovationCampus and its research partners, we would like to ask the visiting researcher to give a talk in the context of our (public) university colloquia. We will approach all grantees separately regarding the arrangements.
We currently do not have an alumni list. Due to data privacy law, we ask all funded individuals to consent to their personal information. The persons interested will then be put on an internal list. Networking events and colloquia are planned on a regular basis.
You can find the information about data protection here (the document is only available in German).
