AI and 5G for Electric Public Transport

- News

Project OTrace Successfully Completed

As part of the OTRACE project (Over the Air Communication for Sustainable Energy Management of Fleets), the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the University of Stuttgart, together with industry partners Vector Informatik and Daimler Buses, developed a cloud solution for public transport. Funded by the InnovationCampus Future Mobility (ICM), the project demonstrates how data, AI, and 5G technologies can be leveraged to make electric city buses more efficient and sustainable.

Key Results

  • Increased Range: Up to 10% more range for electric city buses.
  • Cost Reduction: Electronics and IT costs were reduced by shifting vehicle functions to the cloud.
  • Sustainability: Significant CO₂ emissions reduction through optimized energy management.

Technologies

Vehicle functions such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning were optimized using artificial intelligence and fleet data and shifted to the cloud via 5G technology. Combining private and public 5G networks allowed field tests across an entire fleet of city buses. These experiments utilized daily data collections from the vehicles and provided a solid foundation for data-driven research.
