Realistic simulation environment as a virtual laboratory
A digital twin is the virtual representation of physical or non-physical processes, systems or objects. It also reflects the associated data transfer.
So far, the digital twin for projects of the InnovationCampus Mobility of the Future (ICM) mainly comprises models of the functions of a vehicle. A digital twin of the environment in which the vehicle is used is still missing. This gap can be closed by integrating roads from the real world into the simulation.
The aim of the project is to build a realistic environment simulation for early development and testing of vehicle functions. Its representation should be very detailed and include, for example, buildings and other environmental objects such as road signs or traffic lights.
The simulation environment will be implemented with the open source tool CARLA. The road map for the environment will be in OpenDrive format and the 3D model of the environment will probably be in FBX data format.
Within the scope of this project, regions relevant for ICM projects will be selected and an environment model (OpenDrive + FBX) will be acquired for them.
With this simulation environment for testing and developing functions, vehicle functions can be tested at an early stage without having to equip a vehicle with the function and move it on the road.
