In a collaboration, researchers from the University of Stuttgart (ISW, IFSW, HLRS) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (wbk, AIFB, SCC) have joined forces in the Gaia-X4ICM project to create a Gaia-X-based digital ecosystem for manufacturing - an important step toward efficient, sustainable, and highly flexible production environments that meet the complex demands of Industry 4.0.
The aim of the project Gaia-X4ICM was to establish the idea of digital ecosystems for manufacturing, to enable the coupling with production systems, and thus to create the basis for a strong scaling innovation platform for the InnovationCampus Future Mobility (ICM) and beyond for research and industry.
Our recently published whitepaper shares key lessons and insights gained from this ambitious project. It addresses the strategic importance of digital ecosystems like Gaia-X in enabling secure data exchange, fostering co-innovation, and strengthening the value chain. By applying these principles to real-world manufacturing, the project reveals critical insights into both the potentials and practical limitations of Gaia-X-based ecosystems in a manufacturing context.
