Efficient Software Engineering for Automation

- News

The novomation team is developing an innovative framework for automation engineers that makes the control of manufacturing systems more flexible and hardware-independent. By participating in the ICM Early Ride Program they aim to further develop their solution and lay the foundation for their company formation. In the interview Moritz Walker and Marc Fischer share what motivates them.

Why is your project/product a real innovation: What improvement does it bring for consumer/end users?

,,Our mission is more efficient software engineering for automation. We simplify the development and deployment of complex software in automation systems. Our solutions enable simple implementation of automation system platforms and help our customers focus on their business models and value creation.''

How did you come up with the idea?

,,We noticed that engineering and orchestrating automation systems is often complex. This complexity is increasing as IT and automation converge. So, we came up with the idea to provide solutions which enable our customers to focus on what matters. We help them focus on building your platforms solution by providing SDKs and solutions for flexible automation system software.''

Which milestone of your development have you just passed and which do you want to tackle next?

,,Our most recent milestones were first paid projects with customers. There we helped them defining and building their future automation software platforms.''

The biggest challenge on the way to founding a start-up is...

,,...prioritizing what to focus on at any given point as there is plenty to do, some of more and some of less immediate.''

When and why did you realise that you wanted/needed to found a start-up with your idea?

,,The idea was born at an early stage of our research career and confirmed in discussions with others in the domain. Market research and industry-funded projects confirmed that a solution was needed.''

Why did you take part in the Early Ride programme and where do you want to be at the end of the programme?

,,The course for implementing innovations in different contexts and the involvement of established companies create an optimal learning ground for us as participants. We appreciate how we learn to think entrepreneurially. At the end of the program, we want to found the company.''

The best reasons in favour of Baden-Württemberg as a start-up location:

  • Strong industry and strong small and mid-tier companies
  • Strong research in the area of automation systems
  • Länd of the tinkerers
