LAB8 - BZX-in-the-Loop

Physical-Virtual Test Environment for Fuel Cells Using the IPEK X-in-the-Loop Approach

In this project, a test environment for the investigation of fuel cells and systems will be established. The goal is to improve the power density, lifetime and dynamics of a fuel cell system.

On the test bench, the effects of geometry and material changes of individual components (such as bipolar plate, gas diffusion layer or membrane electrode assembly) on the fuel cell system in operation can be investigated. For this purpose, a physical-virtual coupling is used with the aid of the IPEK X-in-the-loop approach.

 Approach

The test environment allows investigations of fuel cells and systems:

  • Operational investigations with regard to the optimization of
    • stack or system power density
    • Lifetime
    • Dynamics of the load demand
  • Investigations of local conditions within the stack or bipolar plate
    • temperature
    • relative humidity
    • pressure
    • Gas mass flow
    • Gas concentration
