Integrated Framework for Multidisciplinary Engineering for CPPS

Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) are the next generation of adaptive production systems which bring together modern production techniques and the latest information technology. Software is playing an increasingly important role in their maintenance and operation. Each domain uses their own heterogeneous methods and tools during development and operation of CPPSs. Despite tremendous progress in software engineering, maintaining consistency across the domains and integrating existing product lifecycle management from mechanical engineering with application lifecycle management tools from software engineering is difficult.

Goal

This project aims at developing a full integration framework, which, while allowing engineering disciplines to keep their domain-specific tools, artifacts, and work processes, provides means to integrate knowledge across the domains. Such an environment allows the derivation of relevant information for the design, maintenance, and reconfiguration for long-running CPPSs across the involved domains for increased decision making and production.

Approach

  • Investigation of strengths and weaknesses of existing domain-specific tools, artifacts and data exchange formats for CPPS engineering.
  • Design and implementation of the modular integration framework for artifact transformation and variability management.
  • Integration of established artifacts and tools from CPPS engineering, especially those of mechanical engineering.
  • Develop a testbench that allows the reconfiguration of the modeled CPPS.

Benefits

The results will support the digital transformation of manufacturing by providing a modular framework to build, operate and adapt CPPSs. The project lays the foundation for a holistic engineering approach, which overcomes the fragmented nature of today’s CPPS engineering tools.
